Gabriel Souto

I am a incoming first-year at Carnegie Mellon University, where I intend to major in Statistics and Machine Learning. Currently, I am working as intern at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation within Mata Lab. My current interests include AI and ML research as well as statistical genomics and bioinformatics.

Education

B.S. in Statistics and Machine Learning (intended)
Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA
Expected graduation: May, 2030

Experience

Intern
Mata Lab, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, OH
June 2024 - present
Working under Dr. Mata at Mata Lab within the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. I handle data processing and statistical analysis in Python, preparing datasets for modeling and helping interpret computational results.

Intern
Wang Lab, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH
June 2024 - present
Conducted research under a graduate researcher in the Wang Lab at Case Western Reserve University. I analyzed colorectal cancer and liver metastasis samples comprising over 10,000 cells using R, performing preprocessing, normalization, and differential expression analysis. I collaborated with two researchers to interpret findings and present results in a capstone presentation.

Highlighted Projects

Gut Dysbiosis Analysis
Processed and analyzed single-cell RNA sequencing datasets from GEO using R (Seurat, tidyverse, ggplot2). Performed clustering and dimensionality reduction (PCA & UMAP) to identify cell populations. Quantified condition-specific cluster proportions and gene expression changes associated with gut dysbiosis.

Internet Usage and Political Stability Analysis
Analyzed global internet usage patterns using World Bank data with Python (pandas, scikit-learn, statsmodels). Applied ANOVA and linear regression to examine relationships between income group, political stability, and internet adoption. Built a random forest regression model to predict internet penetration using GDP and political stability as key predictors.
